Flashback to August, 1994. In an auto repair shop in Merriam,
KS, a suburb of Kansas City, three musicians hooked up to
become the band later to be known as the brannock device.
Two of the members, Jason Beers (b,v) and Jeremy Schutte
(g,v), had known each other since kindergarten in 1978 and
began playing music together around age 11. Bernie Dugan
(d,v), a fine young gentleman in his own right, had also been
playing since about the same age. Luckily for Jeremy and
Jason, he had no band in the works at the time.
A few “garage” sessions later, the three moved their evolving original songs into Bernie’s basement in Shawnee, KS. This was the incubator that developed the band’s sound into what has been called; “odd, kick-ass shit” and “hard-to-categorize, but easy-to-dig alternarock”, by the Pitch Weeky, Kansas City’s arts, community and entertainment newspaper. By Winter of 1995, the brannock device, named after the “scientific device” that measures feet, began taking these songs out. First playing parties and all-ages venues, the band quickly gained a small, but loyal, following. This, and their unique sound, led to opening slots from Summer of 1995 to Spring ’96 for such national touring acts as Built to Spill, Yo La Tengo, 7-Seconds and Alice Donut. Plus, the band began headlining smaller clubs and opening for regional favorites Cher U.K. and MU330. Things really seemed to be on a roll . . . Yet, like many stories, there is a twist. Classes at K.U. and a full-time job began taking up all of guitarist Jeremy‘s time. In fact, he even suggested leaving the band. However, Jason and Bernie would have none of that. So, the three decided to stick it out, playing sporadic shows around the area and working on new songs to add to their growing catalog of originals. In the Fall of 1997. Jeremy finally reached his final semester of school. The band realized that by Winter of 1998, they will have the time and songs to again release their jazzy-punk musings on an unsuspecting public. For those of you unfamiliar with the band's sound, influences include: The Police, XTC, The Minutemen, Bruce Springsteen, John Coltrane and Camper Van Beethoven.
