All these qualities are evident in live performance, but are represented especially on K'sapa's new album called "Our Own Ways." All the songs on "Our Own Ways" are originals with lyrics and melodies by Kim, and music and instrumentation by Robert, the two founders of K'sapa.
The songs themselves cover a variety of styles, yet never stray from K'sapa's sound -- from an upbeat and bluesy "Nicotine Blues", to a laid-back, jazz-flavored smoky ode to an on-again/off-again relationship in New Orleans, called "The Sultry One". In between are songs sometimes thoughtful, sometimes fun, oftentimes both. Fitting for a band whose name, K'sapa, means "wise" in Lakota (Robert is Lakota and Choctaw).
While the album doesn't stray too far from K'sapa's live sound, there are some extras for fans who buy the album: the addition of string sounds that enhance, but don't get in the way; extra harmonies added by Kim; even a solo from Gary called "Popcan" -- he plays a Diet Coke can with a quarter-inch of water in it! You gotta hear this!
K'sapa is currently finishing its second album. Tentatively titled ''Stars,''
it will include fan favorites ''Stars'' and Robert's guitar solo called
''Diane's Dance.''
Also, watch for K'sapa's CD release party at Fedora 210 on the Plaza, Feb. 4.
