The Welterweights
Nathaniel Williams - Vocals and Guitar
History: Dave had recently moved to Kansas City after graduating from KU. One day, on a trip to the
record store, Dave ran into his old high school buddy Nate. Nate was mildly annoying
customers with an in-store acoustic performance of his original material. That night, Nate
introduced Dave to Corey, who’d been writing songs with Nate for a while. Beer drinking
ensued, and by the end of the night, we decided to form a band. Dave knew Elizabeth from her
past bass work in other local bands. We all liked the same bands, the same type of music. It
seemed like a formula for success, but heck, you tell us if it works.
Sound: The Welterweights play loud, twangy rock. With a ballad here and there. That probably means more to most people
than calling ourselves an "alt-country/power-pop hybrid outfit." If you like catchy melodies
played on distorted guitars with thoughtful lyrics, that's about where we're at.
Our main inspirations are bands like The Rolling Stones, The Replacements, and Uncle
Tupelo/Son Volt/Wilco - bands that can break your heart with one song and kick you in the ass
with the next. Truth is, sometimes we sound like Johnny Cash, other times Superchunk. We
try to keep a common thread and vibe in all our music, without being beholden to any
particular genre.
