Interview with Brandon of the Gadjits nominees for "Song of the Year", "Album of the Year" and "Best Ska/Punk Band" 1998 Klammies Congratulations on your nominations! You were up for some tough competition, were you upset about not winning? Thank you very much. I feel like we really did have some tough competition so no, I am not upset really. If all the awards had gone to bands that suck, I would be upset....but everyone was really good. Who are some local bands or musicians that you admire or feel should be recognized? I was upset that o'phil got dissed. They are really great. I really think Ida Mcbeth is the bee's knees. It is really an honor to be nominated for a music related award in the same town where she lives. I think alot of the local bands we have been playing with are really deserving of more attention. For example, Element, or the Distorted. Punk bands that we play shows in Shawnee Mission park with. Who do you feel has helped you pave the road to these nominations and where you are today? Well, Tim Armstrong and everybody at our record label for starters. they are taking a huge chance with us and we really admire them for it. People like the folks at what was the Daily Grind or at Avalanche productions or Gee Coffee....they gave us a chance at the very start. So we worked very hard for them and they worked very hard for us and we will never forget them for it. Lots of people have been behind us, stood up or looked out for us and we are their biggest fans. Still being in high school, how do you find the time to play gigs, study, and get to school on time let alone get good grades? I myself am not currently in school, nor is Hilary. Zach and Adam's schools have been very cool in bending the rules a bit to let them complete their educations and still take advantage of these opportunities. But for Z and A it is still very hard work. Lots of correspondance courses for them when we are on tour. Where do you feel the Gadjits will be around next year's KLAMMIES? With any luck we will be supporting another album. We do look forward to next year's Klammies but we are not counting on winning one. I for one am uncomfortable with competitions within circles of artists, but hell, it is an excuse to get dressed to kill, put my girlfriend on my arm and go hang around with a bunch of people I rarely see outside their professional lives. Even if we were not nominated I would still go just to hang out with Jeff Brown. Again, congratulations on the nominations and thanks for taking the time to chat with me. Is there anything else you'd like to add? I'd add that we will be playing around the area quite a bit for the next couple months and I know there are a lot of people who have not seen us in awile so do come out and take in the show. It probably would'nt hurt to give our album a spin either. I know there are a lot of skeptics but shit, what's 45 minutes out of your whole life? |
