Helium, the Pulsars and the Anniversary
the Bottleneck, Lawrence, Ks.
Thursday, March 12 1998

The night started out with The Anniversary. They were quite impressive. With the sounds of Weezer, and touches of Built to Spill, along with layered moog made for a fun band to listen to. Despite the fact they were textbook "geek rock" they were still original and fun to watch. Their moog player was also quite impressive making some sounds I didn't think possible. All in all I'd see them again if the occasion arose.

After The Anniversary, The Pulsars played. [long space before comment] They were interesting to say the least. They were Reminiscent of the music Mike Myers used to play on his Sprockets skit on Saturday Night Live. I was almost expecting a lot of people in tight neon to start coming out and dancing real close to each other. I guess you could say I wasn't real impressed with the whole deal.

Then came the main attraction. I was kind of upset by how many people left before Helium started, but I think it may have helped the whole mood of their amazing show. Helium played through their wonderfully beautiful songs better than any band that I remember seeing.... ever! Mary Timony's nearly erotic voice was almost as beautiful as she is. Her guitar playing despite a few obvious mistakes was nearly as wonderful as her voice. Ash Bowie played some of the most melodic bass lines I've heard, to compliment the almost sloppy indie style of the band. Shawn Devlin kept some near perfect consistent beats among all the ambient indie noise. Helium also had a new keyboard player named Kendall Meade who played with them. She was a good compliment to the rest of the band, adding some nearly subsonic noises in the mist of the trebly guitar. To say the least this show was one for the books. If anybody reading this EVER gets the chance to see them... I suggest you do it!
